One tool that is really a lot of help in cross border trades is YAHOO BABELFISH (formerly Altavista Babelfish) for translations, a tip is to keep your message short and try to avoid words that can have more than one meaning.

Make sure you can pay in the sellers requested methods as paypal isn't always available, and remember it's often cheaper to send cash and take the risk of losing it occasionally than doing an international money transfer.

EBAY

Unfortunately I have to mention evilBay, as much as I dislike them for the worst customer service in the world, which is what you get when you have a monopoly that acts like a dictator.

I search separately on each ebay market. For example, someone in France may list items with the option to 'ship to France only', so they only appear in ebay.fr, therefore I use the following searches for ebay across Europe & Canada:

France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada1, Canada2, Canada3, Netherlands1, Netherlands2, Netherlands3.

I may have missed other European countries out that should be included, and I've not actively watched the US ebay market, but you get the idea.

MARKTPLAATS

http://www.marktplaats.nl/ - A very successful site in The Netherlands for auctions, it uses a different style to ebay as there is no end date to listings, and the seller decides when they will accept an offer. I do three separate searches in the top right search box: "videopac", "g7000", "g7400". Philips were based in The Netherlands and many prototypes and game chips copied by employees turn up here, which has led to some discoveries of unreleased games.
